Slave Stories

*The students read an article that told about a slave who lived long ago named Jeffrey Brace. He was captured in Africa and brought to America. He eventually wrote a book about his experiences as a slave. The students discussed why historical books like this are important to us now.

My name is Megan. I live in a small town in Alaska. In school we learned about slavery. We read Henry’s Freedom Box and Harriet Tubman. I think stories like Jeffrey Brace’s are important because they teach us what life was like for a captured slave.

Jeffrey Brace was a slave and so he told people what it was like to be a way from your family and what it was like to be a slave. It was very hard work to be a slave. He was captured in Africa and shipped to America. He was 16 when he became a slave.

We don’t want bad things like that to happen again. It helps us know how people felt. They were probably very sad and very mad.
